Chrysalis is an aerial performance by Nina Sawant and Christine Lee with music by Shaina Evoniuk. Juxtaposing light and dark, the butterfly is a symbol of both rebirth and death. Embodying these dual meanings, the performers shift between peaceful moments of synchronization, balance, and trust, and an antagonistic chase, launching each other through the air and evoking a sense of danger and mortality.
Chrysalis was commissioned by the Burning Man Arts Organization and presented at the festival in 2019. It was later commissioned as a cinematic film by Circosphere Entertainment. Chrysalis has since been performed at events and galas around the Bay Area and beyond including the 2023 Seattle Moisture Festival and 2024 Shoestring Circus Summer Tour.
